Jerry L. Bollie attempted to save Charles R. Slack from suffocation, Marion, Ohio, July 10, 1974. When Charles, 14, entered an unconnected sewer shaft 14 feet deep, he was overcome by a lack of oxygen and fell unconscious to the bottom in water two feet deep. Among those attracted was Bollie, 32, steel company safety supervisor, who descended metal rungs on the inside of the shaft but lost consciousness after reaching the bottom. He collapsed to a seated position in the water. A rescue squad was summoned; and the fire chief, using rescue aids entered the shaft and took first Bollie and then Charles to the opening, from where they were removed. Charles was dead.
