Jerry L. Conrad rescued Melinda S. Monday from a runaway automobile, Toledo, Ohio, September 23, 1987. Melinda, 2, was alone in a parked car, the engine of which was running, when the car began to move toward a five-lane highway that was carrying rush hour traffic. Conrad, 35, muffler shop supervisor, saw the car from nearby and immediately started to run after it. He caught up with the car, after it had entered the highway, and opened its driver’s door. Pushing Melinda to the passenger side of the front seat, Conrad partially entered the car and put his right foot on the brake pedal while at the same time disengaging the car’s gear. Conrad sustained minor scratches, from which he recovered.
