Jill Ann Atteberry saved Robert L. Tarter, Jr., from drowning, Indianapolis, Indiana, July 3, 1983. Three hundred feet from the bank of his apartment complex lake, Tarter, 22, struggled to stay afloat after his raft was carried beyond reach. He began to swim back to the bank but quickly tired and was submerged. Jill, 13, student, was alerted by those on the bank. She swam to Tarter and with some difficulty pulled him to the surface of the 50-foot-deep water. Maintaining her hold on him, she swam back to the bank, pulling him. Both recovered from exhaustion.
