Jim J. Sengpiel saved Raymond P. and Mary R. Killian from burning, Kappa, Illinois, July 1, 1973. When their sedan was involved in a highway accident at night and flames broke out at the rear end, Killian, 59, and his wife, 56, were unable to open the jammed doors. Sangpiel, 23, research technician, ran to the driver’s door and, through the open window, reached into the sedan, in which there then were flames in the rear-seat compartment. After pulling Killian through the window opening, Sengpiel extended the upper half of his body into the sedan and took hold of Mrs. Killian. He pulled her from the automobile and carried her away from it as the outside flames spread over the back half of the vehicle. Killian and his wife recovered from injuries and minor burns.
