Jim Strand saved Burel R. Stone from burning, Amarillo, Texas, July 31, 1972. When his two-door sedan struck gasoline pumps at a garage, Stone suffered lacerations and, stunned, was knocked to a reclining position on the seat. From splattered gasoline, flames brake out an the sedan’s engine, the fuel pumps, and the pavement. Strand, 31, automotive body repairman, ran to the passenger side of the automobile and opened the door. He was within two feet of the flames on the sedan’s engine as he extended his upper body into the automobile, grasped Stone and dragged him from the vehicle. As they were moving away from the sedan, a burst of flames completely engulfed the automobile.
