Joe Delaney died attempting to save Lanser Perkins and Harry Holland, Jr., from drowning, Monroe, Louisiana, June 29, 1983. While at play in a one-acre pond in Chennault Recreational Complex, Lanser and Harry, both 11, went into water over their heads and foundered. Delaney, 24, professional football player, who was relaxing nearby, was attracted by the commotion, ran into the water, and went toward where the boys had last been seen. On reaching that area, he too went underwater and did not surface. Lanser, who was rescued by others, was revived on the bank, but he died the following morning in the hospital. Harry and Delaney both drowned.
