Joe R. Perkins died attempting to save John B. Rose from drowning, Saxton, Kentucky, May 11, 1913. John, 14, schoolboy, and two other boys were on the Clear Fork River in a boat, and the boat upset. One boy clung to the boat and drifted with the current, and John struggled in water about five feet deep, 70 feet from the bank. The third boy stood on a stone on the bottom. He reached out to help John, but John pulled him into deep water. They struggled and went beneath the surface two or three times, then the boy who had been on the rock freed himself and swam to the bank with difficulty. Perkins, 18, student, had seen the accident and struggle. He waded toward John and swam 15 feet to him. John grabbed Perkins’s head or neck, and they struggled together. Perkins freed himself after they had gone beneath the surface several times, but before he could reach the bank, he sank and was drowned. John was drowned at the point of accident. 12954-1046
