Joel A. Faber helped to save April A. Boone from drowning, Holland, Michigan, July 29, 1993. April, 14, was swimming in Lake Michigan when she was pulled farther out from shore by a strong undertow. She lost consciousness and floated face down. Swimming closer to shore, Faber, 23, teacher was alerted, and he immediately swam out to her. He turned her over and began to swim toward shore with her, calling for help as he fought the undertow. A woman swam out to them and held onto April, allowing Faber to rest; the woman then returned to shore, alerting additional help. Four teen-aged boys responded with body boards. They place April on one of the boards and Faber, who was nearly exhausted, on another and took them the rest of the way to shore. Both April and Faber had to be helped out of the lake, and they were given oxygen at the scene. April required hospital treatment. Both recovered. 68082-7850
