John A. Corso saved Anna M. DeFeis from a fall, Brooklyn, New York, August 11, 1943. Anna, 16, fell out of a window of an apartment building, got hold of a clothesline, and hung two feet from the building and 20 feet above the roof of a one-story building adjoining it. From a window of a building at the opposite side of the roof, Corso, 18, machine operator, got onto a pole near the window and then jumped 15 feet onto the roof. Climbing a fire escape, he balanced himself above the roof with one foot on the narrow railing of the fire escape platform and the other on the lowered sashes of a window. Anna, who was hysterical and was kicking, was three and a half feet from him, and her feet were opposite his chest. Holding with one hand to the window frame, Corso with his other arm encircled Anna and pulled her toward him. Anna lost hold of the clothesline, fell against Corso’s shoulder, and put her arms around his neck. Corso then swung her through the open window, lowered her, and released her. Anna then was unconscious but was revived. . 39953-3333
