John A. Koonz, 19, locomotive firemen, saved Leah C. Lautenschlager, 17, from drowning, Philo, Ohio, January 8, 1909. Koonz broke through the ice on the Philo Canal, 30 feet from land, while extending a stick to Miss Lautenschlager, who was in a hole. After struggling with the girl, sinking once, and being bitten by her, he grasped a pole extended by others and was pulled ashore with her.
