John Adriance, Jr., 25, insurance agent, saved Cordelia M. Keplinger, 33, from drowning, Galveston, Texas, July 15, 1909. The woman got beyond her depth in the Gulf of Mexico 200 feet from shore, and a male companion, after a short struggle, deserted her. Then Adriance swam to her. After being grasped and taken under, he rendered the woman helpless by a blow in the face and towed her to shallow water.
