John B. Deever, 58, banker, saved Leroy B. Howey, 36, farmer, from suffocation, Berryton, Kansas, September 18, 1913. (See case of EDWARD W. HAYS.) Deever reached the well as Hays was being drawn to the surface. The owner of the well was being urged to go down for Howey. Deever said that he would go, and he descended the ladder, having a rope tied around his body and carrying another in his hand. There was a noose in the end of the latter rope, and when Deever reached the bottom of the well, he put the noose around Howey. He then climbed to the surface after having been in the well two or three minutes. Howey was drawn up and revived. 11756-986
