John B. Gross attempted to save Curtis L. Pettaway from being struck by a vehicle, Chattanooga, Tennessee, October 10, 1974. Following a highway accident in which he suffered minor injuries, Pettaway, 36, was sitting on the median strip and was being treated by Gross, 25, emergency medical technician, when a tractor-trailer approached. Although the rig’s brakes were applied, it skidded onto the median strip and toward where Gross was kneeling beside Pettaway. Gross stood up and, delaying his own flight, drew Pettaway to his feet and pulled him aside. The rig struck Pettaway’s automobile, which spun around and struck the two men; but they escaped serious injury.
