John B. Orrock, 20, electrician’s helper, saved Gertrude E. Coffee, 16, from drowning, Lakeport, Ontario, July 24, 1921. Gertrude fell from a dock into deep water in Lake Ontario 395 feet from shore and was carried by a current 50 feet from the dock. Orrock ran 900 feet to a point on the dock opposite her, jumped into the water, and swam to her. She grabbed him around the body, and in a prolonged struggle Orrock’s shirt was torn off, and he and Gertrude went under the surface several times and swallowed water. Orrock finally freed himself and swam with Gertrude 10 feet toward the dock. Other good swimmers then assisted him to take Gertrude to the dock. She was unconscious but was revived. 24215-2080
