John Baranwski, 18, driver, died attempting to save Anthony J. Zlotnik, 16, jig runner, from drowning, Harleigh, Pennsylvania, July 21, 1918. While Anthony and Baranwski were bathing in a pond, Anthony stepped into water seven feet deep 12 feet from the bank. Baranwski took a step or two toward Anthony and took hold of his hand. Baranwski then either lost his footing or was pulled into deep water by Anthony. Neither could swim. They sank together, rose to the surface, and became separated and sank again. Anthony was rescued by another boy, but Baranwski was drowned. 19158-1472
