John Bernard Dorfner saved Frank F. Pace from drowning, Rochester, New York, September 20, 1944. Pace, 23, dropped 100 feet from a bridge into the Genesee River and drifted in a current of five m.p.h., calling for help. It was twilight; and Dorfner, 33, truck driver, who could not see Pace but heard his cries, partly clothed waded from the bank and then swam angling the current 155 feet toward Pace. As he neared Pace, he saw him go under the surface. Making a shallow dive, Dorfner got hold of Pace, rose, and pulled him to the surface. Pace, who was very heavy, flailed his arms. Fearing a struggle, Dorfner struck him; and Pace became inert. Dorfner then swam 155 feet to wadable water and waded to the bank. Pace recovered. 40359-3410
