John C. Reali, 20, electrician, saved Irene J., 15, and Josephine Shields, 33, from drowning, New York, New York, September 5, 1915. Mrs. Shields, Irene, and two other young women, all poor swimmers, became distressed in the Atlantic Ocean off Rockaway Point, where the water was eight feet deep. One of the young women drowned, and another was aided to shore by other swimmers. Reali swam 85 feet to Irene and then swam 85 feet with her to wadable water. Although winded and urged by a friend not to return, he swam back 110 feet to Mrs. Shields and brought her to wadable water. Reali was nauseated and very tired. 15532-1296
