John C. Streeb rescued Nicole R. Wagaman from a runaway automobile, Hanover, Pennsylvania, November 18, 1990. Nicole, 2, was the sole occupant of a car, its engine running, parked in the lot of a convenience store. Streeb, 38, maintenance mechanic, was walking toward the store when the car began to travel backward across the lot toward gasoline pumps. He immediately ran to the car, opened the driver’s door, and steered the car away from the pumps. Streeb stayed with the car as it left the lot and started down an embankment, at which point he lost his balance and fell. As the car continued onto the street, Streeb again caught up to it; he steered it away from a house and stayed with the car as it traveled on the street until he was able to take it to a stop. As he was doing so, the open driver’s door struck a tree, injuring Streeb’s arm. Nicole was uninjured, but Streeb required hospital treatment for a strained left elbow and arm.
