John C. Wright, Jr., sustained fatal injuries attempting to save Frederick C. Maher from an autotruck, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, October 19, 1918. Frederick, 10, and John, 12, schoolboy, coasted downgrade on a toy wagon on a sidewalk and kept pace with an autotruck, which was running in the street at a speed of about 10 m.p.h. Frederick’s back was toward the street, and John, who sat at the rear of the wagon, held the tongue and steered it. When the wagon was crossing a driveway in the sidewalk, it struck an obstacle and veered from its course into the street. John stayed on the wagon and retained his hold on the tongue and tried to steer the wagon clear of the truck, but the wagon ran under the truck between the wheels. Both boys were knocked from the wagon under the truck, a wheel of which ran over and crushed John’s leg. Frederick was stunned, and his head was lacerated, but he recovered. John died of his injuries the following morning. 19234-1441
