John Carruthers, 37, engineer, saved William C. Fleming, 2, from being run over by a train, West Newton, Pennsylvania, July 22,1907. Rushing from the cab to the pilot of a locomotive running 8 m.p.h., Carruthers grasped the child by one arm. Before he could lift him, William’s body was dragged under the pilot. Carruthers clung to William until the train was brought to a stop 60 feet farther on. William was only bruised. 2299-248
