John Chapman died attempting to save Emma J. Sammon from drowning, Rockford, Illinois, July 22, 1917. Miss Sammon, 40, while wading in the Pecatonica River, stepped into water 12 feet deep 30 feet from the bank. She could not swim. Chapman, 34, saddler, who was dressed, ran through shallow water over a bar to the edge of the deep water 15 feet from her and then swam to her. He thrust his hand toward her, and she grasped him around the neck with one arm and at the chest with one hand. Both then sank and were drowned. 18609-1457
