John Charles Wood rescued James W. Martin from an attacking dog, McAlester, Oklahoma, April 11, 1978. Martin, 41, and another man were training attack dogs at a state penitentiary, aided by Wood, 30, a prisoner. When Martin tripped and fell, a Doberman pinscher weighing about 75 pounds leaped on him and began biting him on the arm and the head. Wood picked up a short piece of hose and struck the dog with it. The pinscher turned from Martin and attempted to leap up on Wood, who continued to strike the animal with the hose. The other trainer grasped the dog’s leash and, by swinging the animal in circles, rendered it unconscious. Martin recovered after hospitalization for severe lacerations.
