John D. Anderson died attempting to save Mark S. Bulley from drowning, Manistee, Michigan, July 17, 1987. Mark, 16, floundered in the deep, turbulent waters of Lake Michigan and called for help. Anderson, 46, who was wading in the lake near the beach, swam toward Mark, who submerged near a jetty. Despite very rough water resulting from waves breaking on the jetty, Anderson dived for Mark. He then lost consciousness and had to be pulled from the water by others. Anderson was taken to a hospital, but he could not be revived. Mark also drowned.
