John D. Artley, 32, clerk, died attempting to save Ralph E. Knouse, 31, pharmacist, from drowning, Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, May 31, 1913. Knouse, a good swimmer, was caught by an undertow in the Atlantic Ocean and carried to a point 250 feet from shore. Artley, an expert swimmer, left shallow water and swam to him. Knouse placed his hand on Artley’s shoulder, and Artley swam about 30 feet with him and then suddenly went beneath the surface. He did not come up, and when his body was recovered a few minutes later, it was found that he had died of paralysis of the heart. Knouse was saved by a lifeguard. 11027-869
