John D. Carpenter, 23, student, attempted to save Lewis Conety, 24, laborer, from drowning, Pilot Knob, New York, July 5, 1924. While swimming in Lake George 50 feet from shore, Conety became tired and was unable to make progress. He was submerged once or twice and threshed wildly. Fully clothed, Carpenter dived from a runway 10 feet from Conety, bumped into him, and took hold of him. Conety seized him and held him under the water during a prolonged struggle. A man then swam to them from the runway, separated them with difficulty, and saved Conety. Carpenter in a weakened condition swam to the runway. 26369-2224
