John D. Hayhurst, 32, foreman carpenter, died helping to save Earl S. Stamper, 45, laborer, from suffocation, Cincinnati, Ohio, October 28, 1927. Stamper and another man entered a sewer manhole, 21 feet deep, to work, and Stamper was quickly overcome by gas. His companion climbed up a ladder at the side of the manhole and got out. Although the odor of gas was strong at the top of the manhole, Hayhurst descended with another man into the manhole without taking precaution. Together they raised Stamper and tied a rope that had been lowered to them around him. Stamper was drawn out and revived. Immediately afterward Hayhurst and the other man were overcome and lost their lives. 28039-2271
