John Davidson, 17, factory hand, saved John L. McCormick, 16, schoolboy, from drowning, Saltaire, New York, July 20, 1926. While McCormick was swimming in the Atlantic Ocean about 225 feet off Fire Island, he became fatigued. A man aided him briefly and called to Davidson to help him with McCormick. Davidson swam 25 feet to McCormick, and with difficulty he and the man swam 15 feet toward shore with McCormick. The man became winded and left them. Towing McCormick, Davidson then swam 145 feet against a strong undertow to wadable water, where both were given assistance to reach shore. McCormick was semiconscious but was revived. 26737-2328
