John E. Anderson saved Eli J. Hannay from suffocation, Grinnell, Iowa, October 31, 1932. Sitting in a loop in a rope and holding to the rope, Hannay, 20 gasoline station helper, was lowered through a manhole into a gasoline tank 22 feet deep by Anderson, 30, golf professional, and another man. When he reached the bottom, he was overcome by gasoline fumes and lay in the center of the tank. Anderson tied another rope around himself, and, after inhaling and exhaling several times, he held his breath and was lowered in the tank. He tied the rope on which Hannay had been lowered around Hannay, and Hannay was pulled out of the tank. Anderson then was overcome by the fumes. The men at the top began to pull Anderson upward, and when he had been raised three feet, the rope slipped from him and he fell to the bottom. Protected by a gas mask and with a rope tied to him, a fireman about 10 minutes later entered the tank and tied the rope on Anderson, who was pulled out. The fireman then was drawn out. Hannay and Anderson recovered. 32862-2783
