John E. Dedon died attempting to save Brice L. Willis from drowning, St. Francisville, Louisiana, August 6, 1989. Brice, 8, and Dedon, 42, truck driver, were part of a group that was spending the evening at Thompson Creek. Brice was wading when he stepped into a hole and submerged in deep water. Dedon immediately waded toward him, stepping into the same hole. Dedon grasped Brice and supported him, but a struggle ensued. Dedon’s stepson then swam to them and removed Brice to safety, but Dedon drowned.
