John F. Van Derkar, 40, core maker, died attempting to save Salvatore Sitaro, 7, from drowning, Hoosick Falls, New York, August 20, 1911. Van Derkar swam 30 feet in the Hoosick River to Salvatore, who had fallen from a bridge into water six feet deep. Catching hold of Salvatore, he swam about 10 feet with him and then let go of him and sank. He did not come to the surface again. Salvatore was rescued by two other men. 7133-567
