John Falter, 17, butcher, saved Harry D. McCune, 15, from drowning, Columbus, Ohio, January 3l, 1908. John broke through the ice on the Scioto River 35 feet from shore while going toward Harry, who was in a hole. Grasping Harry, who was sinking, John caught a rope thrown from shore, and both were pulled out.

John Falter, president and treasurer of the Herman Falter Packing co., died Thursday morning at Mr. Carmel Hospital. He was 78.
Falter, of 2439 Dover Rd., began working in the family owned and operated plant in 1904. He was Franklin County’s first recipient of the Carnegie Medal, awarded for his rescue of a young skater who broke through the ice near the Greenlawn bridge in 1907.
He was a member of the Christ King Parish and a trustee of Mt. Carmel Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Marian; daughters, Mrs. Louis C. Murphy, Mrs. Gloria Dutton and Mrs. John N. Stein; brothers, Ben and Paul; and a sister, Mrs. Catherine Hammond; all of Columbus.
