John G. Whitmer, Jr.,saved Margaret R. Locantro from being run over by a streetcar, New Orleans, Louisana, September 15, 1911. Margaret, 3, stopped midway between the rails of a streetcar track at a moment when the car was approaching her at a speed of 17 m.p.h. Whitmer, 23, motorman, who was running the car, applied the handbrake when he was about 80 feet from her. The ground and track were wet, and the wheels slid. When the car was 18 feet from the child and going at a speed of about 6 m.p.h., Whitmer jumped through an open window in the middle of the front of the car. He took about two leaps, grasped the child, and jumped to one side. The bumper of the car touched his thigh as he cleared the track. The car slid until the front end was 50 feet beyond where Margaret had been. 7300-1125
