John Holbrook Ayer rescued Angela D. Vivier from assault, Goulds, Florida, September 17, 1983. Following a minor automobile accident at night, Miss Vivier, 19, was being threatened by a crowd of men. Passing by in his van, Ayer, 34, remodeler, heard Miss Vivier cry for help. He parked, walked through the crowd to her car, and began to escort her to his van. Enroute, they were struck by the men and knocked down. Miss Vivier managed to escape to Ayer’s van as the men continued to attack Ayer. A passing motorist was able to disperse the crowd by driving erratically through it, allowing Ayer to get to his van and flee with Miss Vivier. Miss Vivier recovered from minor bruises. Ayer was hospitalized for five days with a broken jaw and other injuries from which he recovered.
