John I. Bain, 25, farmer, saved Joyce C. Humphreys, 19, insurance agent, from drowning, Gates, Tennessee, July 16, 1921. Humphreys became exhausted while swimming in the South Fork of the Forked Deer River and sank 40 feet from the bank, where the water was eight feet deep. Bain, who was swimming 30 feet from Humphreys, attempted to swim to him against a swift current but made only slight progress. As the current carried Humphreys close to him, Bain took hold of Humphreys by the arm, and Humphreys put both arms around Bain. They sank, and Bain broke loose from Humphreys under water. Upon rising, Bain again got hold of Humphreys, but the latter put both arms around Bain’s neck, and they sank again. Again breaking loose, Bain rose, got hold of the hair of Humphreys, who was then unconscious, and swam and was carried by the current to the bank, a distance of 150 feet from the point he had reached Humphreys. 21784-1807
