John J. Brosnihan, Jr., 17, driver, attempted to save Kenneth S. Mascroft, 11, from drowning, North Grafton, Massachusetts, October 3, 1911. Kenneth, who could not swim, fell into a stream and was carried into the deep, swirling waters of Emery Mill pond, where there was a current of 4 m.p.h. John, who was fully dressed except coat, jumped into the water from a bridge and swam to Kenneth, who grabbed him, and they struggled. For 10 minutes John swam against the current with Kenneth clinging to him, but he could make no headway, and then the current began to carry him slowly toward a power gate at the opposite side of the pond. Kenneth became exhausted and lost his hold on John, and he sank and was drowned 50 feet from the bridge. John then swam over 50 feet farther to a wall, reaching it in an almost exhausted condition. He was pulled from the water by men on the wall. 11035-892
