John J. Fogelman, 31, merchant, saved Sarah, 15, and Mary Pozefsky, 40, and Edward Metz, 24, salesman, from drowning, Gloversville, New York, July 19, 1923. While wading in Caroga Lake, Sarah stepped into deep water 185 feet from shore. Her mother, who could not swim, plunged to her, and they struggled together. Fogelman swam 30 feet to them, and, after a violent struggle during which he was seized by both and taken under the surface several times, he swam and towed them 10 feet toward wadable water. He then reached Metz, who had unexpectedly gotten into deep water. He grasped Metz and supported the three by treading water until a boat was brought to them a minute or two later. Fogelman was about exhausted. 23488-2035
