John J. Riedl, 14, schoolboy, died attempting to save Robert H. Walts, 20, laborer, from drowning, Cazenovia, New York, December 31, 1927. Walts broke through ice and went into water 12 feet deep in Lake Cazenovia at a point 450 feet from the bank. John, who was heavily clothed and was a poor swimmer, ran 100 feet over weak ice and leaned forward as he extended one hand toward Walts. The ice broke under John, and he went into the water.
