John J. Schoff, 14, student, saved Harold E. Marietta, 16, student, and Edward F. Harbison, 13 , student, from drowning, Shiloh, Ohio, June 20, 1921. Harold, wading in the Stillwater River, suddenly stepped into deep water. He put both arms around the neck of Edward who was near him, and both boys held to each other and were carried 20 feet farther into deep water by the current. John swam about 40 feet, dived, and swam 10 feet under water to them. He rose under them and attempted to push them upward and toward the bank, but he made no progress. Then he rose and separated the two boys, and they immediately grasped John at the shoulders, and all were submerged. John was unable to free himself until two other boys swam to them and caused Harold and Edward to release their holds. The last two boys that arrived were kicked and then swam away in fright. John repeatedly let himself down under Harold and Edward and pushed them 16 feet toward a sandbar. A life buoy was tossed from the bar, and Edward and Harold caught hold of it and were drawn 14 feet to the bar, as John swam behind them and aided by pushing. 21860-1821
