John J. Sholly saved a man from drowning, Des Moines, Iowa, June 7, 1983. When a 76-year-old man jumped from a bridge into the middle of the Des Moines River and was carried away by the current, Sholly, 42, clergyman, ran to the bank, removed his coat, and jumped in after him. Despite the high, swift water, Sholly swam to the man, who struggled with him.
