John Jay Sterner, 22, student, saved M. Bernard Cooke, Jr., 18, gauger, from drowning, New Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, June 13, 1928. While Cooke was swimming in Red Bank Creek, he was carried over a dam into turbulent water seven feet deep at a point 70 feet from the bank. There was a suction toward the fall, and Cooke was tossed around helplessly. From the bank, Sterner, who was partly clothed, dived into the water below the dam and with exertion swam 60 feet and got footing on a submerged rock. He rested a moment and then dived and swam 25 feet toward the dam, whereupon Cooke was thrown into his arms in the turmoil of the fall eight feet from the dam. Sterner grasped him and with great effort swam out of the rough water and 27 feet with him to shallow water. Cooke was unconscious but was revived. 28380-2308
