John L. Jones died attempting to save Robert J. Albertson from suffocation, Port Reading, New Jersey, January 23, 1996. At the transportation company terminal where he was employed, Albertson, 45, entered an empty tank trailer and was overcome by toxic fumes. Alerted to his plight was a co-worker, Jones, 34, mechanic. Jones climbed to the top of the tanker, then lowered himself inside, through a manhole. He picked Albertson up and lifted him toward the manhole but then lost consciousness himself and fell to the floor of the tanker. Albertson and Jones were pulled out of the tanker by responding rescue personnel; both had succumbed.
