John L. Sparrow saved C. Bryan Walker from drowning, Virginia Beach, Virginia, August 7, 1925. While swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, Walker, 31, post office clerk, was caught in an off-shore current and carried to a point 200 feet from shore. Sparrow, 31, salesman, swam 130 feet through breakers four feet high and rough water to him and took hold of him. Walker suddenly grabbed Sparrow at the throat with both hands, but Sparrow got free, struck Walker, and stunned him. He then took hold of Walker and with great difficulty swam 120 feet toward shore with him, becoming greatly fatigued. A swimmer then arrived, and he and others took Sparrow and Walker to shore. Both were exhausted but recovered. 25603-2175
