John M. Gillott, 30, draftsman, attempted to save Elma D. Jenkins, 23, from drowning, Greenwich, New Jersey, June 12, 1917. Miss Jenkins fell from a launch into the Cohansey River, where the water was 15 feet deep. It was dark, and there was a heavy mist. Gillott, who was dressed, jumped from the launch and swam 15 feet to Miss Jenkins. After he had supported her for several minutes, she slipped down in his grasp, went under the surface, and locked her arms about his knees. He grasped her hair and broke her hold at once, but her hair slipped from his hand, and she sank and was drowned. Gillott trod water and swam till the launch drew near him. A life preserver was tossed to him, and he lay on it until he was taken aboard the launch. He had been in the water about 10 minutes and was exhausted. 18065-1482
