John Michael Mattson rescued Fitzroy A. Johnson from assault, Pickering, Ontario, August 15, 1988. Johnson, 43, who was stabbed twice during a robbery at his store, fled the store and held its door closed, trapping the assailant inside. He called for help. Visiting nearby, Mattson, 24, truck driver, heard Johnson screaming and ran to the store. He helped Johnson attempt to hold the door closed, but the assailant, who brandished a gun, pushed his way out. A struggle for the gun ensued, during which Mattson was stabbed twice. Mattson secured the assailant’s gun, which he then found to be a fake. Arriving police arrested the assailant. Johnson was hospitalized two weeks for his wounds, which required surgery. Mattson was hospitalized five days for treatment of stab wounds to his chest and right leg, causing him to miss two months’ work.
