John Miller attempted to save William F. and C. Mary Tanner from being killed by a train, Winnetka, Illinois, September 1, 1919. As Tanner, 40, and his wife, 43, were running over a railroad crossing, Mrs. Tanner stumbled and fell as she reached a track on which a train was approaching at a speed of about 43 m.p.h., and Tanner stooped and attempted to lift her to her feet. When the train was about 200 feet from them, Miller, 48, crossing watchman, who was 27 feet from them and had warned them as they started over the crossing, ran beside the track toward them with his right arm outstretched. When he was within a foot of them, his right arm and left leg were struck by the locomotive, and he was hurled away from the track. Tanner and his wife were struck and instantly killed. Miller’s wrist and leg were broken, but he recovered, his right hand being permanently crippled. 21488-1844
