John N.Caruso, 12, schoolboy, died saving A. Carl Chavis, 10, from drowning, Johns Island, South Carolina, June 26, 1968. While walking along a creek with John, Carl slipped and fell into the water in a deep hole which had almost vertical sides. Carl, who could not swim, was submerged in water 12 feet deep, and when he surfaced 10 feet from the bank John was in the water behind him. John, a poor swimmer, twice pushed Carl toward the bank, moving him to the side of the hole. Carl grasped some weeds on the bank and climbed out. He saw John just then surfacing. John told Carl that he could not get out and urged him to get help. He then sank and did not reappear. Carl. ran along the bank to where two men were fishing. They went to the area where John had sunk and searched for him without success. Firemen and rescue squads later recovered the body of John.
