John P. Freund saved Thomas F. Kelley from drowning, East Sandwich, Massachusetts, October 3, 1981. Kelley, 43, was on board a boat that was capsized by high seas in Cape Cod Bay. With a seat cushion for support, he was adrift for four hours before being spotted 900 feet off shore by Freund, 33, stockbroker. Using a small air mattress, Freund made his way through the rough surf and swam to Kelley, who was almost unconscious. Unable to swim to shore with Kelley, who outweighed him, Freund supported Kelley in the 57-degree water until they were picked up by a Coast Guard boat an hour later. Both recovered from hypothermia.
