John Pazyra, 12, schoolboy, attempted to save Modest J. Filipiak, 10, from drowning, Chelsea, Massachusetts, June 28, 1927. Modest fell into the Mystic River at a point about 985 feet from the bank. John, who was clothed, jumped five feet down to the water from the substructure of a bridge, grasped Modest, and supported him as they were carried by a strong current 400 feet away from the bridge. Eventually he became exhausted and let go of Modest, who was drowned. John, unable to swim, floated about 100 feet farther and was then rescued by a man who happened along in a motor boat. 27367-2350
