John R. Boyes, Jr., helped to save Christine M. Reeves from drowning, Ocean Park, Washington, July 31, 1987. Miss Reeves, 19, was wading in the Pacific Ocean when she was carried by a strong current into deeper water. She called for help. Walking on the beach, Boyes, 39, teacher, entered the water and waded and swam to Miss Reeves. Taking hold of her, Boyes began to swim toward shore, but the current carried him and Miss Reeves farther out. As they struggled to make progress, they were joined by Miss Reeves’s brother, who also took hold of her. Fighting the current the entire distance, Boyes and the brother then swam to shore, Miss Reeves in tow. All were exhausted, Miss Reeves requiring hospital treatment, but they recovered.
