John R. Poe, 18, student, saved Neill A. Wilson, 35, sawmill-hand, and attempted to save William Eason, 52, laborer, frorn suffocation, Lowes Grove, North Carolina, August 14, 1926. While working at the bottom of a well 28 feet deep, Eason was overcorne by fumes of exploded dynamite. Wilson thought Eason had simply fainted, and he was lowered on a rope. He was overcome at once and fell from the rope as he was being raised. Many persons arrived at the well, but none would enter. Poe volunteered in spite of a warning that it meant death to enter and of a feeling that he certainly would be overcome. Poe was roped and lowered. At the bottom he was slightly affected by the fumes and called to be drawn out. A few minutes later, Poe, roped and wearing a wet cloth over his nose and mouth, was again lowered. He tied a rope around Wilson and was drawn out. Wilson was then drawn out. Poe repeated the operation, and Eason was drawn out. Eason could not be revived, but Wilson was revived. 26661-2293
